Blepharitis – Niggling Eye Grittiness



Blepharitis is an eyelid inflammation generally occurring due to surfeit bacterial development that is generally not present in the skin, and intermittently caused due to allergies.

Blepharitis is a prevalent eye condition leading to eyelid reddening, itchiness, slight swelling and scaly-appearance at the eyelash base. Crust formations occurs as coarseness of scales becomes more pronounced, eye surface becoming more irritated and forming crustiness that could lead to eyelids sticking to one another when one wakes up after sleep. In case the crust happens to fall into the eye, it could make one sense something being lodged in the eye or feel grittiness.

Blepharitis Signs & Symptoms
  • Sensing something being perennially lodged in the eye.
  • Ocular burning.
  • Overly sensitive to light.
  • Reddening and swelling developing in eyes or lids.
  • Blurriness in vision.
  • Dryness in eyes.
  • Crustiness in eyelashes.
Blepharitis Treatment

There is no cure for Blepharitis, but it could be cured and bought under control via appropriate eyelid sanitation. In case not treated, blepharitis could evolve into a more grave condition like scar-formations or harm to tissues present in the eye. In case one has blepharitis then taking the measures mentioned herewith for treating and cleansing the eye.

  • Using a disinfected flannel or face cloth and wetting it in quite tepid water. Wringing the flannel and placing it over the shut eyelids for 5 minutes. Re-wetting as needed for maintaining the requisite temperature.
  • Placing the tepid, sodden flannel over the forefinger and applying a thinned solution of fifty percent baby shampoo or gentle soap.
  • Cleansing a single eye at an instant, keeping the eyes shut when one cleanses and rubs the flannel or one’s finger over the lashes and lid borders a number of times by the use of parallel stroking moves.
  • Rinsing scrupulously with a cleansed, tepid, soaked flannel and then patting till dry.
Blepharitis Prevention:

There are several measures one could adopt that could help in preventing blepharitis that comprise of:

  • Maintaining facial and hand sanitation.
  • Avoid stroking eyes with unclean fingers, a dirty hankie, etc.
  • Remove all traces of eye makeup prior to sleep times.

In case one is in the initial staging of blepharitis treatment then avoiding usage of eye makeup for preventing any additional aggravation. When one eventually does start using makeup then replacing one’s products that were used on or close to the eyelids as they could be infection-carriers.
